First Aid:

Starting trouble:

The problem faced most often is the starting trouble. After inserting the keys into ignition and realizing that the car key won’t turn is very frustrating. It usually happens because of steering locks. In such cases, just turn the steering wheel a little in the direction that you would turn the key, which in turn helps you to get-set-go process.

Battery:

Almost the first step of every automotive repair is disconnecting the battery from the vehicle. Always remember to disconnect the negative side first. Out of anxiety, most of the self auto repair mechanics forget this valuable step, which might lead to major issues in future.

Whenever you work with batteries and engines, make sure to keep a small fire extinguisher which is rated for the combustible materials handy. This is important because hydrogen gas and gasoline fumes emitted from batteries are highly flammable. Most importantly, don’t smoke while working on batteries.

Also wear protective gloves or use latex examination gloves if possible. Batteries have lot of amps which often cause electric shocks and fire. Make sure to disconnect the negative batteries cable while working on fuel system or fuel lines.

Engine:

Don’t ever try to remove the radiator cap completely from the hot engine in the first attempt. Slowly twist the cap of the radiator (by placing a thick cloth over it). Don’t forget to wear heavy gloves while opening the cap. Wait for a minute till the steam and fluid stops and then remove the cap completely.

After everything is done connect the cables in a proper order. Positive (+) terminal of the donor vehicle should be connected to the positive (+) terminal. Negative (-) terminals, must be connected to the frame or engine block, before starting vehicle.

Clothes and accessories:

Avoid wearing loose clothes while working on an engine. During automotive repairs, loose shirt cuffs, jewelry, neck ties, necklaces, frilly blouse and so on must be strictly avoided. Wearing a pair of heavy steel-toed boots is advisable.

Jack and jack support:

Never attempt automotive repairs under a car if it is supported only by jack alone. Make sure that you support it with ramps or jack stands. Moreover, don’t use cinder or cement blocks as it won’t withstand the mass of the vehicle, which can crush you under the car if it breaks. Also keep a large rock or a heavy brick in front of one of the front wheels, which will prevent the car from rolling.

Some of the no-start problems are simple, others are technically nightmares. These issues can only be solved by professionals. It’s advisable not to attempt anything unless you know what’s wrong and how to fix it.
